Quick answer: A sliding screen door usually falls off because its bottom rollers sit too far up inside the frame, or a roller is worn out. Retract the rollers and lift the screen into the top track. Set the bottom wheels on the rail, then turn the adjustment screws until the screen sits snug and glides.

Is it safe to fix this yourself?

Level What it covers
Safe to do yourself Cleaning the screen rail, putting the screen back on, turning the roller adjustment screws, and replacing torn screen mesh. A screen door is light, so one person can handle it.
Take care Swapping a broken roller, straightening a bent screen frame, or tapping out a dent in the rail. Work slowly so you don’t kink the thin aluminum. On an upstairs balcony, wait for a calm day.
Call a pro The glass patio door next to the screen is also dragging or off track. The rail on the door frame is cracked or worn away. You need a custom-size screen door made.

Find the cause

Look at the screen and the rail before you put anything back. The way it fell off tells you what to fix.

What you notice Likely cause What to do
Screen pops out when someone bumps or pushes it Rollers retracted too far, so the frame sits loose in the tracks Extend the rollers a little so the frame fills the opening
Only one end keeps dropping off One roller is worn, cracked or adjusted lower than the other Check that wheel spins and is intact; replace or re-adjust it
Screen scrapes and jerks, then jumps the rail Dirt, grit or a flat spot on a wheel Clean the rail and wheels, then test again
Comes off at the same spot every time A dent or bent lip in the screen rail Straighten the rail at that spot (see the steps below)
Frame looks twisted, with a wider gap at one corner Bent screen frame, often from wind or a hard push Gently square it by hand, or replace the screen door
Top edge won’t stay in the top track Weak or missing top roller or spring clip, or a screen that is too short Replace the top roller and check the screen height

How to put a sliding screen door back on track

You’ll need:

  • A flat-head and a Phillips screwdriver
  • A stiff putty knife
  • A vacuum with a crevice tool, a small brush and a damp cloth
  • Silicone spray (optional)
  • Work gloves
  1. Take the screen fully out. If it is hanging from one track, lift it free and lean it against a wall. Note which side faces out.
  2. Clean the rail. Vacuum the screen rail on the outside of the door frame, then brush and wipe it. Run your finger along the lip to feel for dents.
  3. Find the adjustment screws. Most screens have one at each bottom corner, on the edge or face of the frame next to the wheel. Some also have screws at the top corners.
  4. Retract the bottom rollers. Turn each screw while you watch the wheel. Keep turning until the wheel pulls up into the frame. The direction differs between brands, so trust what you see.
  5. Fit the top first. Tilt the screen and push the top edge up into the top track. If the top has spring rollers, press up to compress them.
  6. Seat the bottom. Swing the bottom in so the wheels sit over the bottom rail. If a wheel won’t clear the lip, slide the putty knife under it and guide it on.
  7. Extend the rollers. Turn each screw a little at a time until the frame lifts off the sill and sits level. Work both sides evenly.
  8. Check the fit. Try to lift the screen gently. If it pops out, extend the rollers a bit more. If it binds or squeals, back them off slightly.
  9. Test and finish. Slide it end to end several times. A light mist of silicone on the rail, wiped dry, keeps it gliding.

If a roller is broken

Remove the adjustment screw and pry the roller housing out of the frame corner with a flat screwdriver. Take it to a hardware or door parts store and match the wheel size, housing length and type. Top and bottom rollers are often different. Press the new one in, refit the screw, and adjust as above.

If the rail has a dent

Hold a block of wood against the dent and tap it back with a hammer, or ease the lip straight with pliers. Small moves, then check with the screen. If the rail is cracked or worn flat, our guide to sliding door track repair covers your options.

Replacing the screen mesh or the whole screen door

Torn mesh does not mean a new door. Pull out the rubber spline with a pick, lay new mesh over the frame, and roll the spline back in with a spline roller. Trim the extra mesh with a utility knife.

To replace the whole screen door, measure the opening height at both ends. Measure from inside the top track to the top of the bottom rail. Measure the width too. Bring those numbers when you buy. Stock sizes fit many doors, but older or unusual frames often need a custom screen.

When to call a pro

  • The screen falls off again within days, even after you adjust it.
  • The glass door beside it is also hard to slide, sagging or off its track.
  • The screen rail on the door frame is cracked, crushed or worn down.
  • The screen frame is badly bent and won’t square up.
  • You can’t find a replacement screen that fits the opening.

Wind from spring storms around Dallas can bend a screen frame and the rail it rides on in one gust. If both are damaged, our sliding door repair service can fix the rail, fit new rollers or make a screen to size.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my sliding screen door keep coming off the track?

The most common reason is rollers set too high inside the frame, so the screen sits loose. A worn wheel, a bent frame or a dent in the rail can also push it off. Extend the rollers first, then check the wheels and the rail.

Which way do I turn the screw to raise a screen door?

It depends on the brand. Turn the screw a little and watch the wheel. If the wheel moves down out of the frame, you are raising the screen. Adjust both sides by about the same amount.

Can I replace just the track for a sliding screen door?

Sometimes. If your screen runs on its own screwed-down track, you can unscrew it and fit a new one cut to length. If the rail is part of the patio door frame, it can’t be swapped on its own. A dent can be straightened, and a worn rail may take a cover cap.

How do I make a sliding screen door slide easier?

Clean the rail, check that every wheel spins, and set both rollers to the same height. Then use a light coat of silicone spray. Avoid oil or grease, which hold dirt and make it worse.

Do I need to take the screen off to adjust the rollers?

Not usually. You can reach the adjustment screws with the screen in place. Take it off only to clean the rail properly or to replace a roller.
